KINDERGARTEN TOURS - JAN. 27 & FEB. 5

Schmitz Park is pleased to welcome what we expect to be our last Kindergarten class to start in our current building!  In September 2016, we will open in our new building at Genesee Hill, but our current site works beautifully for Kindergarten students, with a separate classroom wing and playground and child-sized facilities throughout.

We have two Kindergarten tours planned this winter to help the families in our attendance area start to plan this exciting transition.  Please join us on Tuesday, January 27th, or Thursday, February 5th, at 9:00 a.m.

The best way to be prepared for Kindergarten is to enroll early! Here is the Seattle Public Schools' flyer with information about how to enroll. Please note that after the open enrollment period, we will start a series of orientation activities before the school year, including a placement survey in May, summer Kindergarten playdates, a family orientation and one-on-one assessment meetings with the teacher at the end of August, and the only way we can contact you is if you enroll!  Because of our severe facilities restrictions, Schmitz Park is unable to participate in Jump Start this year.

2015 NATIONAL GEORAPHIC GEOGRAPHY BEE

On Thursday, January 29, at 1:15 PM, in the school cafeteria Schmitz Park will be holding our annual Geography Bee.

Prelimary quizzes will be given to those 4th and 5th graders that indicate that wish to participate on Tuesday, January 26th, and this round will determine the Top 10 for the GeoBee Finals to be held on Thursday, January 29th. The Finals will determine the school winner and who will be able to take the test to try to qualify for the State GeoBee.Top Ten Finalists will be notified on Monday after the preliminaries.  Families of our finalists (or anyone interested in seeing this competition in action) are welcome to attend on the 29th.

If you have any questions please contact Mr. Nelson at
qcnelson@seattleschools.org. To learn more about the National Geographic Geography Bee visit their website at www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee.

GLOBAL READING CHALLENGE

2014 Global Reading Challenge book titlesThousands of elementary school students from nearly 50 Seattle public schools participate in The Seattle Public Library's  Global Reading Challenge. The students will compete in the Global Reading Challenge as teams. Together they will read and discuss a set of 10 books to prepare for the event, where questions are read and teams write down the answer.

The Schmitz Park in-school challenges will take place February 11th at 1:00.  The top team from each school will then compete in semifinals against other top teams, and the winning schools from the semifinals will go on to compete in the city final.

Here is a link to the flyer about the Global Reading Challenge for this year and the book titles.

GETTING READY FOR THE AUCTION - MARCH 21ST

Items are needed for our annual auction on March 21! The auction’s success depends on great items for bidding. We’ve received excellent support from local businesses, but donations from families are needed too. Items that you can’t buy in a store, and are truly an experience, have been the best sellers in past years – from sports tickets, dinners hosted at homes of Schmitz Park families, sailing excursions to vacation rentals. You can contribute individually, or as a group. Families can also get creative and donate something from their field of expertise (e.g. haircuts, massages, painting a room, technical services).

Click
WISH LIST for donation ideas. If you have something to donate, please go to our new auction website, go to:  http://schmitzpark.schoolauction.net/auction2015/. Fill out our online donation form and click "Submit My Donation." You will receive a Donor Receipt via email. Please submit your donations by Thursday, February 5.

NEW VOLUNTEERING REQUIREMENTS

Seattle Public Schools requirements for volunteering at school have changed slightly for the 2014/2015 school year.  Please make sure that you . . .
  1. Complete a Washington State Patrol background check (this must be conducted every year);
  2. Provide a copy of your drivers license to the front office ;
  3. Complete an online sexual harassment training and print out the certificate and provide a copy to the front office.

Click here for the link to the training.

Please note that all volunteers must sign in at the front desk using Help Counter and print a badge. Those parents who have not completed all three steps in the volunteer process, will not show up as volunteers in this system and will be asked to register as a visitor until they can complete the process. Please let us know if you need access to a computer at school in order to complete the training. We appreciate your help and cooperation with these new requirements.
